The First Census by Poland

This census was taken on September 30, 1921; it contained 7 forms.

Form A –

• a register of inhabitants and livestock
• questions about demographic features and occupation
• the description of households

Form B – a general index of a given community, village, town, etc.

Form C – applied to all buildings and other estates of a given community

Forms D, E, F for county statistics

Form G – for orphaned children

The most important one for genealogical purposes is Form A, because it includes family information, such as:

• household information
• it provides the owner’s name of the house or apartment and an address, and asks whether the family lives in a basement, in an attic, on what floor
• it asks about the number of families in a given building, plus single individuals
• it asks if there are any workshops, factories, etc.
• it gives the total number of persons in a given apartment (including those who are temporarily absent)
• it gives a description of the apartment
• it provides information on livestock
• it includes detailed information about a given family (including those members who are temporarily absent).

This is the most interesting part of census form for genealogical research. There are 30 questions, covering:

• the number of a given household • the numbers of family members
• name
• surname
• relationship to the head of family
• male
• female
• birth date
• place of birth (district, county, country)
• civil status
• religion
• the date of arrival at this residence (permanent or temporary)
• nationality
• mother language
• nationality to which he or she belongs
• whether he/she can read
• education
• deaf and dumb and/or blind
• without hands and/or without legs
• primary occupation
• position in a given occupation (chief, officials, worker, self-employed, or help to family)
• name of plant, workshop, institution, shop
• in a case of a family business, how many people are employed
• if work is at home, does he or she work for himself or for others?
• if unemployed, how long without any work, and for what reason?
• name of other workshops, plants, etc.
• main occupation at the outbreak of war on 1 August 1914
• occupation position (secretary, director, assistant, bookkeeper, etc.)
• locations where absent persons are temporarily residing.

In Poland records less than 100 years old are not available for viewing, even for genealogists. I am going to do more searching to see if somehow I can get a copy of my own family as an example. It is very difficult, however
